Today’s project is pretty dull on it’s own- I transplanted some succulents and put them around the house- so I thought I’d add a bit more to it by showing you the craziness that happens in my brain when I work on my house. Try and stay with me.
Saturday I went to Walmart to buy a dog bed (Dutch WILL learn how to sleep in it) and some curtain clips, and I also ended up leaving with 3 succulents. I thought I might make a cute little terrarium (foreshadowing: I did not.) On the way home I stopped at the dollar store to buy some rocks, fake moss, and glass container for the succulents. They didn’t have any big glass containers, so I just got one small one instead and figured I’d plant everything separately and spread the greenery around the house. And then chaos ensued…
When I got home I laid out all of my supplies:
I was assuming the bowl would sit on the candy dish with a succulent planted inside it, the votive would hold another succulent, and the cow would hold a tiny little part of a succulent. None of those things actually happened. The succulents were too big for the containers I had picked out, even though I tried real hard to make it fit.

See how the lettuce-y looking one sticks up above the votive? And how it looks way too super huge for such a tiny container? That lasted about 5 minutes.
Once I realized my succulent would probably die a cramped, suffocated little death I took a lap around my house and grabbed a metal pot and a hurricane vase (which is in the picture above) to plant it in instead. This went much better, except that I have 3 cats and I can’t actually put plants anywhere they can reach. I decided to put the metal pot on a shelf in my living room, hoping they wouldn’t notice:
Then I decided it wasn’t going to get enough sun there so of course the only option was to completely rearrange the guest room. Yup. That’s the conclusion my brain jumped to.
Also, while I was in the living room I noticed how filthy my couch was, so I took the cushions off and threw them in the laundry. That is why the above photo is so close up.
Anyway, the guest room used to look like this:
I had primed the closet doors earlier in the week and was planning on painting them real funky, but now that I’ve moved the room around I don’t really need to. So instead I just gave them two coats of bright white, rearranged the whole room, swept the entire second floor (moving around a room really shows you how filthy everything is) and now it looks like this:

View from the door straight in. The new arrangement means I now need to find art to hang on each side of the window… and also that I need to get better at taking pictures in the middle of the day when the sun is screaming bright.

View from the lefthand wall to the other side of the room. (sidenote: I will be turning that map into a magnet and framing it just as soon as the snow is gone and I can do projects outside)
My happy little succulent now lives on a shelf facing the window:
And to hop backward for a second, the shelf that I showed you in the beginning now looks like this:
Oh, and if you’re still with me here’s the super easy process I used to transplant:
- put a few rocks at the bottom of your container for drainage
- Add in a little soil
- Place the plant inside and then fill in the sides with more soil
- Spread a little fake moss over the top
Just one more thing… remember those curtain clips I mentioned way up at the beginning? Before I went crazy? Well I bought them because the curtains in the sunroom have been hanging up folded in half for months, I only bought two packages of clips for three curtains. The extra package I bought allowed me to unfold the curtains, making them look a bit more full and useful, which will make a difference to exactly one person: me.

I really want to do some succulents. I have THE most perfect dish for them that has been hanging around our house for some time now, just collecting dust.
I think yours turned out very well!
I want some succulents. How did you get so cute?
I knew I liked you for a reason. This post is pretty much how my entire life works.
Cats and plants–you are so brave! (we lost a silver rabbit ear to a cat this weekend; I’m all “down with cats!” at the moment. Even though mine are cute and all)
haha my cats REALLY screw with how I want my home to look. no rugs, no flowers….
I really enjoyed that trip down your rabbit hole of a brain. Makes me feel like we’re sisters.
haha glad you understand
So cute – I want to make these. I love having plants around the house.
They’re so easy to put together & so difficult to kill… my favorite kind of plant!
LOL!! My kind of plant for sure! Thanks for sharing.
P.S – I love your blog. You have so many cool ideas on it.
