What I Wore Wednesday: Fourth of July Edition

Happy July 4th! Hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing day off!

Today I’m sporting a lovely men’s undershirt (as an overshirt) and 10 year old athletic shorts from the Weathervane, which I’m not entirely sure exists anymore. I’ve got my dirty hair tied up in a gross bun and I think some of yesterday’s mascara smudged under my left eye. OH YEAH.

On tap for this wonderful, relaxing day off:

  • Laundry (one load is already in the washer)
  • Vacuuming all upholstered surfaces and all curtains as well as the baseboards
  • Sweep the floors upstairs and downstairs
  • Bleach the kitchen countertop
  • Dust, dust, dust
  • Watch as many movies as we can squeeze in before bed

What I Wore Wednesday IX

Finally- a WIWW without rain! It’s supposed to be gorgeous out today… of course I won’t get to enjoy it until 3:30 but it’s better then nothing! I think we’ll go for a walk at the park this afternoon…

Today I’ve got on a satin top, some light weight pants, and some cute open toed shoes. Fancy enough for work but still super comfortable.

I’ve had this top for at least 5 years now and it hasn’t faded at all, it’s definitely one of my favorites. As for the pants, I accidentally hemmed them too long and I’m way too lazy to go back and shorten them so I can only wear them with my highest of heels otherwise they drag.

The shoes are  surprisingly comfortable for having a four inch heel and a strappy front. I wear these to pretty much every fancy summer event I have and never once have I gotten a blister. Also, how cute are those ruffles? I think I’ve worn ruffles the past three Wednesdays in a row.

Here’s the breakdown of where it’s all from:

  • Top: Either Macy’s or Filene’s, within the past 5 years
  • Pants: New York & Company, within the past 3 years
  • Shoes: Target, within the past 3 years
  • Necklaces: the tree necklace is from ebay (under $1!) and the other is a hand me down from my aunt

What I Wore Wednesday VIII

pleated poppyHello all! Thanks for stopping by WIWW, where I’m linking up with The Pleated Poppy for another edition of What I Wore Wednesday!

School’s out for the summer but we’re still busy registering new students for classes, which makes for a nice quick day :). Maybe one of these days I’ll post what I look like 5 minutes after I get home- nothing says “fashion icon” quite like a men’s tshirt and 12 year old shorts….

Today I’ve got another cute ruffled top, a cinched belt, and some light Candies pants. It’s finally not freezing in here so no need for layers, and even though it’s still raining I’m wearing open toed shoes anyway! I didn’t paint those nails for nothing.

Here’s the rundown of it all:

  • Top: New York and Company (within the past year)
  • Pants: Kohl’s (within the past 3 years)
  • Belt: Came with another pair of paints!
  • Shoes: Payless… they’re just plain brown wedges

Normally I’d post another picture with a close up of some accessories or whatever, but today I thought I’d detour from that to ask for a little help. Most of my regular readers know I adopted a dog from Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption a few months back, and the rescue is currently trying to win a grant so they can help more awesome dogs in need. Could you take 2 seconds to vote for them here? No name or email address needed- just searched for Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption and identify the state as IN.

I thank you, Dutch thanks you, and Lucky Lab thanks you!!

What I Wore Wednesday VII

WIWW 7th edition already?! You know what that means…. it’s freezing out. But finally not raining (altough to quote Curly from City Slickers, the day ain’t over yet!).

I’m working some layers today, because it’s super chilly in here- I forgot to take a picture of my jacket, sorry. It’s only about 50* out but because it’s June the air is blowing at work, it’s got a scheduled date to turn on and once it’s on they can’t shut it off.

Today I’ve got a tank (as always), a ruffled white shirt, and a vest with my standard black dress pants and black shoes. I think I sort of look like a fancy waitress, but whatever I love my vest and I’m not taking it off! Finding a cute, short, cropped vest was far more difficult then it should have been. I bought it 2 or 3 years ago when vests were somewhat popular in the fancy time clothes department and I must have gone to over 5 stores looking for the perfect one- because of this I have absolutely no idea where it came from.

I thought I’d show off my purse and wallet today too, both are from the same store but were purchased at separate times. The purse, which is HUGE and AWESOME my mom got for me a few months ago and the wallet is actually a clutch that I purchased several years ago.

I use the same wallet every single day, since it’s in my purse it doesn’t need to match. For work I generally go back and forth between this bag and the one I featured in WIWW IV because they’re both spacious and have lots of pockets inside.

Here’s the rundown for it all:

  • Ruffled shirt: New York & Company (within the past 2 years)
  • Vest: unknown (within the past 3 years)
  • Dress pants: Gap
  • Black heels: Payless
  • Purse: Anne Klein from TJ Maxx
  • Clutch: Kathy Von Zeeland from TJ Maxx

So what are you wearing today? Do you have any standard work purses? Can you please make it 75* and sunny? Tell me in the comments or join me on The Pleated Poppy!

What I Wore Wednesday VI

It’s Wednesday! And you know what that means… it’s raining. It’s a curse. But besides that, it’s finally warm enough for summer clothes!

Now that all the students are gone it’s pretty slow around here, lots of time for revisions and catch up work. Today I decided to wear a blue button down, brown dress capris, and blue shoes.  Nothing too fancy, but still work appropriate. I haven’t worn these capris since last summer and whew they still fit, but seriously I really need to get my exercise on. As for the shirt, I don’t wear it a ton because it wrinkles super easy and animal hair sticks to it like crazy- but for a slow day sitting at my desk it should be fine.

What you can’t see too well in the picture is a pearl necklace, a slim gold bangle, and a gold pinky ring. If nothing else, WIWW is encouraging me to actually wear some of the jewelry that’s been hiding in my room for years. I have a hard time wearing nice jewelry, the Revere girl in me really just wants to wear plastic hoops and fake diamonds every day and unfortunately that’s just a weekend look now. ::le sigh::

But let me not forget to mention the real superstars here: Jergens lotion and Blister Block. I’m so pale that my tan is basically everyone else’s natural color, so there’s no way you’re getting me in shorts, skirts, or capris unless I’ve had at least a week’s work of time with Jergens natural glow. It’s the only thing that doesn’t turn me orange and doesn’t look completely unnatural.

Further, most of my open toe non-wedge heels are very pinchy. So Blister Block is amazing, it’s like this teeny tiny deodorant looking stick that goes on like an invisible wax wherever you might get shoe bites and it just runs house all day long. I think I picked it up in the band aid aisle- I’ve had this same tiny stick for a couple years now, so it’s worth the $8 or $9 that you spend.

As for where everything came from:

  • Shirt: Charlotte Russe (within the past 3 years)
  • Capris: Kohl’s (within the past 3 years)
  • Shoes: Payless (within the past 3 years)
  • Necklace, bracelet, ring: all gifts!

So what are you wearing today? Let me know in the comments or join me in linking up to The Pleated Poppy!

What I Wore Wednesday V

It’s Wednesday again and guess what- it’s still raining. I think WIWW has seriously cursed the weather around here. Anyway, I tried to insert a little cheery color into my outfit today to help brighten things up… but that’s not really my thing so once again I’m mostly draped in dark colors.

We’ve got an office retreat today from 8:00am-1:00pm, and by “retreat’ I mean we’ll be sitting in the basement of the library today and hopefully we’ll all make it out alive. But for that reason, I wasn’t super worried about being fancy and decided to be a little more fun.

Point of note: so many of my clothes and shoes right now have some sort of ruffle on them. It’s nearly impossible to buy clothes without ruffles right now.

My pants look a little stretched and pulled, but that’s just because they’re straight out of the dryer. By the time I got to work today they were back to they’re usual self, haha!

What you can’t see in the picture above is that my pants have the slightest pin stripe going on. I have hemmed them up 5inches even though I bought the petite size! Let me just say that I absolutely hate how “petite” and “ankle” and “short” labels still assume that you’re over five feet tall. Well I am not! I’m five feet on the nose and because of that everything needs heels or a hem. Ugh.

My shoes have the slightest snake skin pattern on them, I’ve had them for years and they’re one of my go to summer shoes because the heel is only about two inches and the front is wide enough for my big fat feet.

Here’s the run down on where it all came from:

  • Cropped yellow top: 5*7*9 (over 3 years ago)
  • Shirt: Ann Taylor loft (within the past year)
  • Pants: New York & Company (within the past 3 years)
  • Shoes: Payless (within the past 3 years)
  • Bracelet: I honestly do not remember, probably Forever 21 though.

So my friends, what are you wearing today? Leave it in the comments or hook up with me on The Pleated Poppy. Dutch is just dying to know….

What I Wore Wednesday IV

Welcome back for the fourth edition of WIWW! It’s still raining and dreary out, but it’s finally not freezing so I’ve been in sort sleeves all week. It’s a pretty exciting time around the office right now, I work at a community college and graduation is tomorrow night. The program I work in has lots of graduates moving on so we’ve had award ceremonies, lunches, professional development, etc. Today is the first day I have nothing on my schedule but regular day to day tasks!

We normally keep it pretty business casual around here, but especially so now that the students are gone. Surprise, surprise- I’ve got more navy, elastic waist, comfortable clothes on today.

I really am all about being outwardly professional and inwardly super comfortable all day long.

My top has a boat neck and a peacock feather pattern, and the sleeves are that extra wide drop style so I’m cardigan free this week. My pants have got to be at least 5 years old and in ironing them this morning I noticed how badly I need new brown dress pants- but man are they hard to find! I don’t want cream, I don’t want beige, I don’t want stripes- I just want plain old brown pants. Also, I only want them if they’re from the Gap because their petite length pants are the only pants I can find that I don’t have to hem shorter. I’ll be keeping my eyes out for a sale!

In addition to my simple little outfit, I picked out some really cute accessories. I have to admit, I’ve been wearing the same earrings everyday for months now so I really needed to switch it up.

I’ve been using this purse all week- it’s work appropriate beige, but Stephanie appropriate metallic :). Then I’ve got a gold watch bracelet and some dangling pearl earrings.

Here’s the run down on where it’s all from:

  • Satin shirt: honestly, I have no idea. Sorry!
  • Brown pants: Kohl’s, about 5 years ago
  • Shoes: Walmart, about 5 years ago (you’d never know!)
  • Purse: TJ Maxx, Ecko Red brand, within the past 2 years
  • Bracelet: Modcloth.com, within the past 2 years
  • Earrings: Etsy.com, within the past 2 years

So tell me- what are YOU wearing today? Tell me in the comments, or join me in linking up the The Pleated Poppy!

What I Wore Wednesday III

Hooray for WIWW! It’s rainy and chilly and dreary still, and I’m holding on to wearing dark colors for as long as possible! Also, I love love love wearing dresses when it rains because then there’s no dealing with soggy pant bottoms and slushy dirt stains.

I’m in love with this dress. It’s baggy but it has an elastic waist so there’s nothing nipping and tucking all day, it’s long enough to wear to work, and it’s navy blue. I own 5 navy blue dresses, I’m just drawn to them. For a very very very long time I refused to even put on a dress, and now here I am saying I’m drawn to a particular kind. Weird.  This one in particular I stumbled upon completely by accident. I brought a whole mess of clothes with me into the dressing room, and per usual absolutely none of them fit. The previous clothes-tryer-on-er had left this little number behind and I thought why not!, even though on a hanger it looked completely shapeless and awful. Well, it ended up being the only clothing I bought at the store that day and it taught me that even if something looks awful it’s worth giving it a try! And it has POCKETS!

I’m going to refer to my beige cover up as a duster, though I have no idea if that’s what they’re still called these days. Does anyone else remember a time when sweater dusters were so super popular and everyone had to have one? And it basically just looked like we were all wearing fancy bathrobes all the time? I do. And it was approximately 15 years ago. But per usual, I digress- basically I have these dusters to cover up my  butt in case I want to wear a dress to work but it’s a little too tight in the tookus. It’s not the case with this dress, but it does work well to break up all the blue.

Today I had lots of student appointments, which meant lots of hours sitting at my desk, which meant super uncomfortable but still super cute shoes! Yeah! On the downside, they waxed the floors last night so whenever I did actually have to get up I had to maneuver newly shined floors in 5 inch stilettos. Yowza.

Also, these herringbone pattern tights/ stockings/ nylons/ whatever you kids are calling them these days were a random find when we were clearing out the closet at my Aunt’s house. I love me some pattern nylons- it’s the best way to secretly look a little trashy. Which is always ok in my book.

So here’s the run down of where everything came from:

  • Dress: Banana Republic Outlet (within the past year)
  • Duster: TJ Maxx (within the past year)
  • Shoes: 9 West Outlet (within the past year)
  • Necklace: Banana Republic Outlet (within the past year)
  • Nylons: Amazing surprise find at my Aunt’s house

What I Wore Wednesday II

Welcome to the second edition of WIWW! Wouldn’t you know, I found another blogger (totally way more internet famous then me) doing the same thing. Hop on over to The Pleated Poppy to check out not only what she wore today but what her tons of followers wore too!

Today was a tough get up and get dressed day for me- I’m fighting off an intense stomach bug and I also had a really important meeting today. Basically I haven’t been able to hold down food since Monday night and I absolutely had get out of bed and bring my A game to work. I needed to balance comfort with fancy, and here’s what I came up with:

I decided to keep it super simple: black shoes, black pants, black shirt, and a silver blazer. Nothing too tight or too clingy, nothing itchy or pull-y.

I am not the type to wear a full matching suit, and I never expect to be, so for me this was professional with style. I can’t be in head to toe black, and I hate suit jackets, so I felt that this met somewhere in the middle. Sure a shimmering silver jacket is a little wild for a professional meeting, and rolled sleeves are semi-Miami Vice but I think it looked just fab.

I kept my jewelry as minimal as my outfit today too- flashy, but not overpowering. A girl always needs some flash, amirite?!

Here’s the run down of where it all came from:

  • Silver Candie’s brand blazer: Kohl’s (last week!)
  • Black t-shirt: TJ Maxx (sometime in the past 2 years)
  • Black dress pants: Gap (sometime in the past 2 years)
  • Black ankle boots: Payless (within the year)
  • Fossil watch: TJ Maxx (within the year)
  • Pendant necklace: a bridesmaids gift from my dear friend Megan

And so I throw it to you- what did you wear on this dreary, rainy Wednesday?

What I Wore Wednesday

I’d like to start up/trial run a little series here titled What I Wore Wednesday, where each Wednesday I’ll post what I wore (if you couldn’t have guessed that from the title) and where it came from. I think fashion sense absolutely crosses over to decor style and it’ll be interesting to see how the two go together.

Several blogs I follow do something similar, which is where I got the idea. Cassie over at Hi Sugarplum!  has a whole section of her blog dedicated to outfit inspirations - where she draws style from the environment around her. Kate over at The Small Things Blog has a keen eye for creating cute  outfits that are affordable and realistic for everyday.

I chose Wednesday because it’s smack in the middle of the week, so chances are I’ll be in work clothes. Basically if I’m not in work clothes, I look like crap. I hate being fancy, I’m no good at being uncomfortable in my clothes, and really I just want to wear jeans and a t-shirt everyday. Right now I’m typing this blog in fleece pj’s and a hooded sweatshirt I’ve owned since high school. So when I say “Wednesday” I mean what I have on from 7:30am-3:30pm.

Anyways, here we go!

Springy! Cute! Work appropriate!

I class it up at work and manage to be pretty stylish most days. But there are several things that always hold true:

  • I am forever in layers. I always have a tank top on under every single thing I wear. I don’t know why, I started in high school and I just never stopped. I also absolutely hate it when it’s so warm out that I can’t wear nylons anymore- I eventually succumb to it, but not without a fight.
  • I will never wear a sleeveless shirt without something over it. This is partly because I have a shoulder tattoo and partly because in working at a college I am surrounded by students and want to set a good example of what is work appropriate for young professionals.

Why yes, I did chop off my head in this picture. Do you know how many shots Matt would have had to take to get one that I find online acceptable? I’ll tell you: one million. So no face shots! But anyway, here’s how it all pulled together and I think it’s darn cute! I was pretty comfy today in my flats scooting around campus. Most days I’m in 4-5 inch heels, but during course registration time I do a lot of walking new students around and shuffling paperwork from here to there so I try to keep myself flat to the ground.

And here’s the run down on where it all came from, top to bottom:

  • Necklace: Forever 21 (sometime in the past 2 years- thanks Amy!!)
  • Black cardigan: New York & Company (sometime in the past 2 years)
  • Cream top: Kohl’s (yesterday!)
  • Black dress pants: Kohl’s (about 5 years ago)
  • Ballet flats : Marshall’s (sometime in the past 2 years)

So what did you wear today? Do you post fashion on your blog? Let’s link up! Share your link in the comments or email sandpaperandglue@gmail.com and I’ll add it to the post!
