High 5 for Friday: VACATION EDITION

Happy Friday, all! Instead of a round up of the 5 best things from this week, I thought I’d do a quick vacation must-have round up because we just got back from a week in New Orleans.

This was actually our first real vacation, and we’ve been together almost 5 years. WOAH. It was way overdue. We stayed from Sunday-Saturday and did about a zillion things a day.

As far as travel goes, these were my top 5 must haves:

vacation collage must have travel toiletries

  • Comfy age-appropriate tops: Here’s the thing, I could have easily just worn an old t-shirt every day. I have a million of them. But I knew we’d be taking  pictures and, ahem, getting drinks, and I just didn’t want to look like I was 14. So I bought some nice Mossimo sheer tanks at Target that I can also wear to work and it was super worthwhile to feel like a grown up out on vacation and look nice while still being comfortable.
  • Victoria’s Secret Make Up Spray: New Orleans is hot. We were out from about 10am-11pm every  day. I needed me a make up finisher and this was perfect– it’s actually the same one I used on my wedding day and I love it.
  • Colgate Wisps: These little guys are the best for on-the-go tooth brushing, especially at the airport. It really helps to be able to brush your teeth when you’ve been sitting in an airport, eating airport food, during a day of travel.
  • Denizen Cropped Jeans from Target: I am 5ft tall and have never, ever, ever found cropped pants that actually fit.  Until now. These jeans were an awesome fit, had a comfortable stretch to them, and looked great. (Note: they fell about 3 inches lower on me then they do on the model above. Darn short legs!)
  • Something different: I think vacation time is the perfect time to try something out of your comfort zone. You’re in a new place, with new people and you’ve got nothing to worry about. For me, it was red lipstick. I never, ever, ever wear lipstick because it intimidates me so while on vacation I put on a bold red lip every night before we went out. I loved it!

What are your vacation must haves? I’d love to know!

What I Wore Wednesday IX

Finally- a WIWW without rain! It’s supposed to be gorgeous out today… of course I won’t get to enjoy it until 3:30 but it’s better then nothing! I think we’ll go for a walk at the park this afternoon…

Today I’ve got on a satin top, some light weight pants, and some cute open toed shoes. Fancy enough for work but still super comfortable.

I’ve had this top for at least 5 years now and it hasn’t faded at all, it’s definitely one of my favorites. As for the pants, I accidentally hemmed them too long and I’m way too lazy to go back and shorten them so I can only wear them with my highest of heels otherwise they drag.

The shoes are  surprisingly comfortable for having a four inch heel and a strappy front. I wear these to pretty much every fancy summer event I have and never once have I gotten a blister. Also, how cute are those ruffles? I think I’ve worn ruffles the past three Wednesdays in a row.

Here’s the breakdown of where it’s all from:

  • Top: Either Macy’s or Filene’s, within the past 5 years
  • Pants: New York & Company, within the past 3 years
  • Shoes: Target, within the past 3 years
  • Necklaces: the tree necklace is from ebay (under $1!) and the other is a hand me down from my aunt

So what are you wearing today? Join me on The Pleated Poppy!

Thank you tax return!

I was a good girl when I got my tax return and put aside the amount of money it costs for homeowner’s insurance each year, so I can pay it off in one lump sum and not have another monthly payment. But I still had money left over and I’ve been itching to make some slightly larger purchases.

First, I went to Big Lots and got a super cute kitchen cart, which I will post this weekend when I post whole view photos of the kitchen. The cart is white with a metal top, so it works well with the kitchen and living room. It’s a great size and holds everything that was originally on the entertainment center (yup, entertainment center) that was originally in it’s spot. Dare I say that I am now done working on the kitchen? I’m almost afraid that if I do, something will break.

Then, just this morning, I bought some slipper chairs from Target. They’ll arrive sometime next week, just in time to finishing sprucing up the house a little before Nonna’s birthday party next Saturday. I purposely bought two of the same chair even though they’re going in different rooms so if we ever want to move around furniture we’ll have a matching set.

Originally, I wasn’t even looking at this one. I had picked out an all yellow chair with this wispy pattern on it. Then when I went to get Matt’s approval (I like to make sure I’m not overly girly), he picked out this one and I agreed.

I plan to put one in our sunroom (which is green and yellow) and one in our bedroom (which is blues and wood tones).

And DON’T TELL MATT but I think I’m eventually going to want to paint the sun room from green to this shade of blue- so it doesn’t match perfectly now but it might in the next year or so. I just feel that room is disconnected from the kitchen (yellow and white)  & living room (grey, yellow, and white)  and bringing in a third color that actually matches would help with the flow down there. Those three rooms are all wide open to each other, so I think I may need to get them on the same page.

Anyway, if you are in the market for some basic chairs you should really check out Target’s online selection. There are some cute things popping up over there!

knick knacks & do dads

Now that the first floor has been completely painted, it’s time to start decorating! Here’s a massive amount of pictures to show that finally our house is becoming a home:

The salavation army mirror I painted black, now hanging on the wall by the entryway. It looks really nice to have a painted black wood frame here and a black wood occasional table set.

The end table I personally assembled! It took an hour to assemble each one (there’s 2)  because you need teeny tiny hands to get into the areas where the screws go. And yes, I have already decorated for Fall/Halloween.

Our bookshelf! I think eventually I’m going to paint the inside of it yellow and stencil a white pattern on to it, but that may not be for months. The decorating of these shelves may change a million more times, but for now I really like it. The top shelf is me and my family, the middle shelf is Matt and his family, the lower shelf is our friends, and the base is our Shel Silverstein poem books. Then the added shelf on the bottom hold all our board and card games.

Our cheerful yellow kitchen! It’s not quite so yellow in person, the camera flash brightened it up a bit. It’s lovely, and I’m so glad it’s finally done. Note the 3 jar liberty of london canister set, one of my most prized possessions. I bought basically everything that came out in the line they made for Target. Our kitchen will be just perfect once we get the sink installed.

A little close up of the owl vase I keep all my cooking supplies in, my owl pair salt & pepper shaker, and the painted spoon rest from Pier 1. They’re cuter in person, and close up. Trust me.

My just-for-now table centerpiece… see how here the wall doesn’t even look yellow. I think that’s my crazy camera flash again. I have pumpkins basically all over the house, I always have a rooster in my kitchen, and the other little trinket is a scarecrow votive holder. He’s very handsome and has a little crow on his straw hat. Yeah Fall!

Want to know where I got anything? Or to see something more close up? Let me know in the comments!

Also, I’ll have you know that despite the fall-y cheerfulness things are not all rainbows and sunshine here in home ownership land. This morning we woke up to find that we have no hot water. I’m pretty sure it’s just because we desperately need an oil delivery so keep your fingers crossed for us that it’s not another huge-o problem!
